Studio Jazz (Big Band) Ensemble Auditions, Fall 2023 (Trumpets, Trombones, Saxophones)

<p><span>Auditions for the Studio Jazz/Big Band will include performance of a chromatic scale from lowest to highest and back down, an up-to-one-minute excerpt (student choice), transcription, etude, etc., that demonstrates the musician's abilities as a jazz player, sight-reading, and improvisation (optional).

<p>Small combos perform original music and arrangements of jazz standards, modern classics, and deep cuts from the popular music repertoire over two consecutive nights of performance. </p>

<p>University of Washington Jazz Studies presents a free show by the Kris Davis Trio— Grammy winning pianist/composer Kris Davis, bassist Robert Hurst, and drummer Johnathan Blake—performing in support of Davis’s new album "Run the Gauntlet,” out on Sept. 27 from Pyroclastic Records. Students from the Jazz Studies program open. </p>

THEME lecture series: Charles Kronengold, Stanford University, "The Chaka Khanplex, 1977–1983" 

<blockquote><span><span>Charles Kronengold, faculty member at Stanford University, presents "The Chaka Khanplex, 1977-78." </span></span>This paper focuses on R&B singer Chaka Khan to argue that theorists should move from the causal models of actor-network theories toward Black feminist concepts of friendship, relationality, and what Jennifer Nash calls “the side-by-side-ness of the beautiful and loss.”</blockquote>

<p>The School of Music joins with the Seattle Flute Society (SFS) for its Flute Celebration Day, featuring Professor Zhao Rong “Peter" Chen, School of Music alumnus and faculty member at China Conservatory of Music and other highly regarded institutions throughout China. His performance is followed by additional performances from the Seattle Flute Society Flute Choir and other SFS members. With pianists Robin McCabe, Yue Li, and October Chen.</p>
