<p>This year's Seattle Design Festival (SDF) Block Party takes place on August 21 and 22. Installations, pop ups, and activities in Lake Union Park address this year's festival theme: EMERGE. <a href="https://designinpublic.org/about-sdf-faq/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">As the SDF website says</a>, this year's theme: "seeks to inspire action, addressing the consequences of the pandemic to nurture new possibilities.
<h2>Project</h2>
<p>The Black Embodiments Studio (BES) proudly presents <em>Notes from the Panorama</em>, a new video collaboration between multidisciplinary artist Carolyn Lazard and writer/performer Amber Rose Johnson. The work combines archival images of Black rest and leisure with an accompanying performance score; together they aim to slow time and support embodied awareness during major transitions in the pandemic, which has only intensified the need for rest in Black and Brown communities, in particular.</p>
<p>As we await the return of the Seattle Art Fair in 2022, we celebrate the second year of the <a href="https://www.seattledeconstructedartfair.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Seattle Deconstructed Art Fair</a> (SDAF). <p>Jia Jia received her Master of Fine Arts degree in 3D4M: ceramics + glass + sculpture in June 2021. She was the graduate student speaker for the School's virtual Graduation Celebration 2021. Below is the text of her speech.</p>
<hr /><p>Hi Everyone, I am Jia Jia, a second-year graduate student from the 3D4M program, and I come from China. I feel really honored to be here and to represent all the graduate students in the School of Art + Art History + Design.</p>
<p>Alexis Calma received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History in June 2021. She was the Division of Art History's undergraduate speaker for the School's virtual Graduation Celebration 2021. Below is the text of her speech.</p>
<h2>Background</h2>
<p>Kathleen Ash-Milby received her Art History bachelor's degree in 1991. She went on to receive an MA at the University of New Mexico and then to work in New York City for over 20 years, at American Indian Community House and at the National Museum of the American Indian. Ash-Milby was president of the Native American Art Studies Association from 2011–2015. She was appointed the Curator of Native American Art at Portland Art Museum in 2019.</p>
<h2>Interview</h2>
<p>Each year, the University of Washington recognizes 100 students from across all three campuses. The <a href="https://www.washington.edu/husky100/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Husky 100 website</a> says that these students connect activities inside the classroom and beyond to make a difference at the UW, in communities, and into the future.</p>
<p>The School of Art + Art History + Design is pleased to announce the <a href="https://2021.uwsoaahdgradshow.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2021 Graduate Showcase</a>, a website that documents the work of our graduating graduate students. It debuted on June 11. We are proud of their research and accomplishments.</p>
