BA in Art Departmental Honors Program: Updates from Current Students

<h2><strong>Background</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The start of this academic year brought layers of anxious excitement for our new cohort of BA in Art Departmental Honors students. This group of 17 were selected through a competitive admission process during the year prior, and for many of them, this autumn was their first time stepping onto the UW campus, their first quarter in the UW Art Building, and their first time meeting their classmates in real life.</span></p>

MONDAY – Volume 6

<h2>About</h2>
<p>The sixth volume of <em>MONDAY</em>, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery’s arts journal, will debut February 3, 2022. Titled “Lux Aeterna,” the new volume extends the themes and inquiries of the gallery’s 2021 <a href="/news/2021/07/15/lux-aeterna">exhibition</a> of the same name, which considered how technological, economic, and cultural forces shape the ways we produce, share, and experience media — and how that media in turn influences our values and aesthetics. </p>

Q+A with Noah Simblist

<h2><span>Background</span></h2>
<p><span>Noah Simblist is associate professor in the Painting + Printmaking department at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also works as a curator, writer, and artist with a focus on art and politics, specifically the ways in which contemporary artists address history. He earned his Ph.D in art history from the University of Texas at Austin (2015), his MFA in painting from the University of Washington (1999), and his BA in visual art from Hampshire College (1996).</span></p>

2022 Critical Issues Lecture Series

<h2>Series</h2>
<p>The 2022 Critical Issues Lecture Series takes place on Friday afternoons during winter quarter. It is organized by the School of Art + Art History + Design in collaboration with the Henry Art Gallery. The general public is invited to join degree-seeking individuals studying fine art in order to share ideas and raise questions about contemporary art. In addition to the public lectures, undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in ART 361/561 interface with the speakers in additional sessions.</p>

Making Meaning; Art and Mathematics as Embodied Practices

What does it mean to make meaning? To make objects that have meaning? We will explore, via projects of making, a continuing dialogue between two seemingly disparate disciplines: art and mathematics. 

We’ll tackle a wide variety of questions about creativity, process, social history, and justice, via hands-on experimentation and making. Using logic and imagination in creative problem solving, students will expand the scope of their making, mathematical and artistic, and communication skills.

Informs ability to see art as a tool to examine history, ideology, beauty, and ultimately the image-saturated present.
