<p>As voice assistants like Alexa and Siri become nearly ubiquitous, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies are increasingly integrated in our lives, listening to our private conversations, and responding to our queries with automated replies. What does it mean that we’ve become familiar with these non-human interactions? What is the labor that goes into creating and supporting them? What are their limitations?</p>

<p>The Jacob Lawrence Gallery is thrilled to announce that Ariel René Jackson will be the 2021 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Resident. Jackson’s film-based multidisciplinary practice considers land and landscape as sites of internal representation. For the 2021 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency, Jackson (she/her/hers and they/them/theirs) will be collaborating with performance artist Michael J. Love (he/him/his).</p>

<p>COVID-19 prevention efforts resulted in University of Washington classes going online in March, and it is impossible to know when in-person classes will again be the norm. We asked a few students to write about their experiences in online classes.</p>

<h2>Background</h2>
<p>We periodically do a question and answer session with an alum to learn more about their experiences while at the UW and since graduation. Tamar Benzikry received her bachelor's degree in 2005; her majors were Art History (with distinction) and Jewish Studies through the Jackson School of International Studies. After two years of graduate study in New York City, Benzikry returned to the Greater Seattle area to begin a career in curating and coordinating art projects.</p>
<h2>Interview</h2>

<p>Fourteen years after the <a href="/research/publications/designing-type">first edition</a> was published, Professor Karen Cheng is releasing the fully revised second edition of her widely known book <em>Designing Type</em>.

<p>Beginning on September 30, 2020, visitors may again view exhibitions at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Below are the steps to follow in order to take advantage of this opportunity during the gallery's normal hours: Tuesdays–Fridays, 10am–5pm, and Saturdays, 1–5pm. We look forward to seeing you!</p>
